GA4 Audience & Acquisition

An acquisition-quality analysis for a 50K+ user website, designed to separate traffic volume from traffic that actually contributes.

Context & role

Context: The site had growing traffic but unclear evidence on source quality. My role: Independent web analyst, responsible for the GA4 acquisition analysis, traffic-quality diagnosis, and channel recommendation.

The problem / decision

Which acquisition sources were creating engaged audiences - and where was reporting being distorted by low-quality traffic?

Method & artifacts

Diagnostic approach

Quality before volume

  • Compared GA4 acquisition and engagement patterns across the site audience.
  • Isolated bot traffic with near-zero engagement from meaningful visitor behavior.
  • Used source-level performance to turn the analysis into channel priorities.

Recommendation & outcome

Prioritize SEO opportunities, bot filtering, and content that earns repeat engagement. Organic search produced three times higher engagement than social channels, making quality - not raw reach - the right optimization target.

What I would measure next

Track clean-user sessions, engaged sessions by source, return visits, content depth, and conversion actions. A quarterly source-quality review would prevent low-value volume from distorting decisions again.
